Ten Pin Alley Temporary Closure Announcement

Posted on: June 22, 2017

Updated with comment/statement from owner. The original notice is below.

At Ten Pin Alley we care about our guests and team. Our job is to serve the community to the very best of our ability with the following motto as our compass….

We connect people, we strengthen families, we serve our community, through a team that is appreciated and supported.

Expansions create challenges under the best of circumstances, and unforeseen problems test one’s creativity and fortitude. Our goal is to build a facility that our team will be proud to call home, and a destination the community will embrace as their own.

When we began this endeavor of building a special place for our community, we chose to decrease the price of the beloved Summer Pass from the usual $100 to $85, to offset inconveniences to guest experience that the expansion might cause.

We have always been very price sensitive and work hard to stay competitive with other bowling establishments in town. We have been proud to offer this deeply discounted Summer Pass price for families to enjoy throughout the summer, and at $100 felt it to be a fantastic value.

The unfortunate need to temporarily close Ten Pin Alley was very difficult, with our community and team as the top of our consideration.

While some guests still find our Summer Pass a great value, others have different feelings which have been well voiced throughout social media. Because we want everyone to be pleased with their experience with us, we have come up with what we consider to be an opportunity for all Summer Pass holders. We are extending to all who have purchased the Summer Pass 2 options.

1. If you appreciate the pass and value, continue to enjoy your time with us until the final day of July 30th. Keep the pass in your possession until we reopen, and then bring it in for a free hour on our new lanes and beautiful new center!

2. If you would like a refund for the pass you purchased, simply bring the pass back in before 8pm on Wednesday, June 28th and we will give you a full refund. Use of the pass will be terminated at the time refund is received.

We appreciate your continued patronage and the opportunity to serve our community.

Warm Regards,

Sarah Purdy
Owner, Ten Pin Alley

Dear Guests,

As many of you are aware, Ten Pin Alley is growing. We are very excited about the upcoming changes and equally excited to share with all of you – our guests – these new additions, activities and options that will be available once renovations are completed.

We have received much positive feedback. Those who already consider us a destination for fun and entertainment for their families will be happy with what is coming. Rest assured that while much will be changing physically, our personality, quirkiness and attention to service and a focus on quality experience will remain the same.

With all growth however, there come challenges and unexpected delays. Construction has
begun, but in order to meet our deadline of early November we will be closing on Sunday, July 30 – that Sunday will be the last day we are open until our grand reopening (exact date TBA).

If you have not purchased it yet, sales of the summer pass will continue, however you have until July 30 to get in here as often as you want to take advantage of this awesome program. We did reduce the price this year to compensate for any unforeseen obstacles or delays in the use of your pass. Now that we know we wanted to get the word out as quickly as possible so you can enjoy some summer bowling. Current pass holders have until then to continue using your pass as often as you’d like.

But be sure to hang on to your passes! We will offer summer pass holders some special offers and have some fun once we reopen later this year. Also, don’t think we’re going to go silent while we’re closed. We’ll be keeping you all updated on the construction with behind-the-scenes pics, email updates and more.

We appreciate all of your patience throughout this process.

Sincerely,

The Staff and Management of Ten Pin Alley

Burgers & Bowling Lunch Feature

Posted on: March 13, 2017

Tired of sitting for lunch? We know, it’s so much work….sit there, gossip, talk about work, eat then go back to work. Why not try something new? Grab a coworker or friend and stop in Ten Pin Alley for a juicy burger and a game of bowling over lunch.

Burgers & Bowling Details

  • Valid Monday – Friday from 11:30am-3:00pm.
  • Simply walk in or call in advance to place your order (if pressed for time).
  • Select from one of our three delicious burgers;
    • Mushroom Swiss: sautéed mushrooms, caramelized onion and Swiss cheese.
    • Morning Applewood: Medium-fried egg, smoked Applewood bacon, American cheese, lettuce and tomato.
    • The Stranger: Topped with bourbon BBQ sauce, Cheddar cheese, bacon and onion rings.

Each of our burgers are a custom sirloin blend and come with seasoned hand-cut fries and a pickle spear.

This offer is not valid on groups larger than 10.

This lunch special runs Monday – Friday from now until May 31.

Massive Expansion at Ten Pin Alley

Posted on: November 2, 2016

So what do you think? Looks pretty cool, huh? This is a rendering of your soon to be newly renovated and expanded Ten Pin Alley, which should be ready for you to enjoy late summer 2017. But fret not, we will be open for business during construction which is scheduled to begin in January. Here are some details….

We will be doubling our current 14,600 square foot center to over 33,000 square feet. When completed, our center will include an additional eight lane VIP section, additional party rooms, a two-story laser tag arena, arcade with redemption, four bocce courts, renovated bar, restaurant and patio featuring a gas fire pit, ample seating and direct access to the main bar.

Some of you may be asking, well what about volleyball? Unfortunately, one negative affect of our growth will be the loss of volleyball. Yes, we are upset about it. Volleyball has been a part of us for over 10 years, and we worked hard to try and fit it into the new layout. However, it was a simple matter of space. We didn’t have the room. Those of you who play will undoubtedly continue to play elsewhere, however we hope you’ll still visit with us in the future.

New_VIP_Lanes

The new, 8-lane VIP room will join our existing 16 lanes giving us a total of 24 total lanes. The VIP room will feature comfortable seating at the lanes, a mini bar, billiard tables and party room; an additional, more private location for parties, events and other special occasions. Each of the 24 lanes will feature the latest state-of-the-art Brunswick pinsetters as we’ll be updating our current one. So great news for league bowlers as this will dramatically reduce issues with the lanes and speed up the entire process.

interior_concourse1

Kids (and adults…it’s OK, you can play too) will love the new two-story, 2,300 sq. ft. laser tag arena with a cool layout, lighting and equipment. Outside the arena will be a 2,900 sq. ft. arcade with 50 games, providing you with the latest in interactive entertainment and prizes. Our birthday party options just tripled!

Another unique addition will be the four, 60’ bocce courts which will be a part of the new patio. The courts will be available for open play, reservation, and leagues. There will be seating on the patio, access to the new bar and a fire pit.

interior_restaurant_bar

Our current kitchen will also be expanded, along with a restaurant with seating for 60. As for the menu, don’t worry, we’ll be keeping many of our signature items such as the Big Lebowski Nachos and Alley Fries, but we’ll be able to do a lot more. Plus, we’re excited about our new open woodstone pizza oven.

Please note that the images do not represent the final look. In other words, the light fixtures, chairs and other little things will likely be changed, for example. These images help us, and you, get a good idea of what we’re doing.

outside_overview
We plan on keeping everyone updated throughout the project, and as we get closer get ready for special sneak peaks and more. But like we said above, we will be open during construction. If you have any questions (we’ll try to answer as best we can) please feel free to ask at info@tenpinalley.com. Thanks!

BBBS Update

Posted on: October 28, 2016

This year’s summer pass was a great success and we thank everyone who purchased the pass to enjoy some summer bowling with us.

As some of you may remember we partnered with Big Brothers Big Sisters of Central Ohio for our 2016 Summer Pass to assist this fantastic organization. Here’s what we did:

  • $2 from every general pass sold will go directly to Big Brothers Big Sisters
  • $25 from every pass purchased by a “Big” will go directly to Big Brothers Big Sisters
  • For every 40 passes sold, Ten Pin Alley will donate one FREE birthday party to an at-risk child currently involved with Big Brothers Big Sisters

We are happy to say that over $1400 was donated directly to BBBS and over 15 children in the program will receive free birthday parties. These are children who may have never had a birthday party before and the parties we’ve hosted so far have been a huge success and the kids have loved it!

Thank you to everyone who purchased a pass this year!

Partnership with Ten Pin Alley

There are 3 ways Ten Pin Alley is helping BBBS of Central Ohio this summer, and YOUR PURCHASE HELPS.

  • First, for every pass sold, $2 will be donated to BBBS.
  • Second, $25 of every pass purchased by a “big” will be donated*. So if you currently volunteer with BBBS and are looking for a fun activity to do with your “little” this summer, know that $25 of your pass purchase will go to BBBS.
  • Third, for every 40 passes sold Ten Pin Alley will donate a FREE birthday to an at-risk child currently involved in BBBS. These children may not have the opportunity to have a birthday party, and we want to provide them with one.

We are positive that with the popularity of the pass we can reach our goal of $2000 and 25 free birthday parties (valued at over $3000)! How great is that!?

*If you’re a “big” and want to purchase a pass, you must stop in and show your card so we can give credit to BBBS. You may also use the pass with your family as well!

New Movie Screens!

Posted on: March 9, 2016

If you hadn’t noticed, bowling centers aren’t exactly what they used to be. No smoking, computerized scoring, comfy seating (for the most part) and more entertainment options.

At Ten Pin Alley we are always trying to keep our customers happy and entertained. Whether creating and offering the popular summer bowling pass to keeping our food a cut above the rest; we strive to entertain and serve.

Last week we installed three, 12’ retractable screens above the lanes. For the past few days they’ve been in use and if you’ve seen them in action…well, we think they’re pretty cool and we hope you agree.

moviescreeninstall

To be fair, many newer centers do feature screens – typically at the back where the traditional “masking unit” is found. Our screens are further out and raise and lower directly above the lanes. You can see them better and we plan to use them for more than showing ESPN all day.

Currently during weekend bowling and then full time in the summer, the screens will feature music videos from today’s most popular artists. Customizable play lists will allow us to offer different types of age appropriate music depending on the time of day and audience, and you will be able to request songs during certain times and events.

What we’re most excited about is that we’ll be using these not just for music but also to create unique events revolving around movies and perhaps TV shows. Once things really start rolling keep an eye out for cult movie nights and other packages revolving around seasonal movies, TV shows and sporting events.

So stop in and dance to your favorite videos, cheer for your favorite teams, laugh and scream with your favorite movies all while spending time bowling with friends and family!

UPDATING OUR LANES

Posted on: July 30, 2015

After 50 plus years, the all wood lanes at Hilliard’s Ten Pin Alley are making the change to a synthetic overlay. Ten Pin Alley is (was) one of the last all wood centers in Columbus.

To put it frankly, back in the day, all lanes were wood. But then in the 80’s, a new synthetic material was invented; a pressed paper product which acted as a new type of lane – longer lasting and easier to maintain.

So what’s that mean? Every couple years any center with all wood lanes would need to sand and smooth their lanes. Even though the oil used daily on bowling lanes helps protect them, they do get banged up quite a bit resulting in numerous dents, bumps and scratches –  imagine a 14 pound weight thrown thousands of times and you’ll get the idea. So every couple years the lanes would require a fine sanding along the length of the lane, followed by a new polishing and chemical sealant. However you can only sand so many times over the course of decades until the wood is too thin for use.

Here’s a look at the before and after:

lanecompare

It will be nice to not have to do that anymore. Some of you may have visited during that time and remember the smells. It would be pretty rough in here for those few days. We would close to the public, open all the doors and use fans, but it’s a strong smell and you had a heck of a headache when you got home.

That type of maintenance will no longer be needed as the new overlay is stronger, longer lasting and created to take the punishment of balls being dropped, thrown and slid across it thousands of times a week.  Another added benefit is the oil will remain on the lanes longer, as wood lanes have a tendency to soak up most of the oil over the course of the day.

So are we ripping up the whole lane? No it’s an overlay and the entire lane is not being replaced. Only the top ½ inch is being removed, and that’s only at the initial foul line. From that initial depth the wood moves up at angle until it levels out. The rest of the lane is stripped and the overlay goes on top.

Here’s a picture of the guys at work:

LaneWork4

The approach (the area you stand and walk-up to throw your ball) will remain wood and receive a nice sanding and polish when everything is completed.

The crew responsible for this is Ten Pin Construction, one of the only available for this type of work, and led by Brian Sashko. Brian and his crew have been kind enough to work through the night (from close to open), doing two lanes per evening to minimize the impact on summer bowling. Brian says this is one of the busiest bowling alleys he’s ever seen during the summer. Thanks summer pass!

LaneWork1

Total construction time was expected to take 2 weeks and they’re entering the home stretch; hoping to be done by Monday. In addition to the new look and feel, the synthetic lanes POP a lot more under black lights, providing a nice glow for late night bowling.

Here’s a shot of some completed lanes next to the remaining few that need done. Quite a difference!
